Thais Carrascoza: A Journey of Passion, Perseverance, and Purpose
Thais Carrascoza’s journey to being named Western Australia International Student of the Year 2024 is one of incredible determination, resilience, and unwavering passion. A mother of two primary school children, Thais made the courageous decision to return to education after her youngest child started school full-time. Her goal was clear—to reinvest in herself and pursue her passion for helping others, particularly women who are victims of domestic violence.
Before enrolling in the Diploma of Community Services at Acknowledge Education’s Perth campus, Thais was dependent on her husband’s visa. But as she embraced her newfound opportunity to study, she began to carve her own path in Australia. She chose the Diploma of Community Services because of her deep commitment to supporting vulnerable individuals, particularly those affected by domestic violence, helping them regain control over their lives.
Thais’s determination extended to her practical experience, where she independently secured two placements that aligned with her personal and professional goals. Her first placement was with a welfare organization that supports LGBTQIA+ youth who have experienced domestic violence or been displaced due to their sexuality. Here, she gained invaluable experience in case management, early intervention, and planning. Thais also took the initiative to organize and deliver a fashion parade celebrating diversity and inclusion—a moment that further solidified her passion for community work.
Her second placement, at a local council’s community development department, offered her even more opportunities to grow. This role allowed Thais to be involved in high-level community planning, execute events, conduct consultations and surveys, and engage with community groups. This placement provided her with a deeper understanding of how community services can impact people’s lives on a larger scale.
While Thais’s journey has been remarkable, it wasn’t without its challenges. From balancing the demands of motherhood and managing her children’s routines, to navigating financial barriers and personal difficulties, Thais faced numerous obstacles. COVID-19 added further complications, but she never gave up. Through faith, resilience, patience, and an unshakable determination, she has proven that anything is possible with the right mindset.
Thais also expresses her deep gratitude to the Acknowledge Education community, particularly her lecturers, Katrina Perera and Michael Iski. Their guidance, support, and encouragement were pivotal in helping her overcome challenges and push her to apply for the WA Training Awards. “I am honored to be a finalist and want to extend my heartfelt thanks for helping me become a community worker and make a difference in people’s lives,” she shared.
Thais’s story is a powerful testament to the transformative power of education and community service. Her commitment to helping others, despite the challenges she has faced, is inspiring. As the Western Australia International Student of the Year 2024, she stands as a role model for others, showing that with resilience and passion, we can make a lasting impact in the world.
